DOKI✜POW is a casually developed turn-based role-playing game. The game is developed by Derahex with the help of his friends and family.
The original prompt for the concept was "what if the hero defeated the big bad with the power of love and then they kissed?"
There was messing around and making a few gags about it, however, after a few iterations and concepts, I liked the idea of making this into a game. I was well aware the road ahead would be difficult, but this was a personal challenge I wanted to commit to.
And in May of 2024, about one year after I officially started development, I've successfully completed a first proof-of-concept demo of DOKI✜POW and tested it with a small group!
Aight, so what is the game like?
DOKI✜POW is created in the style of JRPGs. Rather than having random fights, the focus will be narrowed down to a small number of meaningful encounters.
The player has the option to solve each encounter's conflict through LOVE or VIOLENCE.
In a VIOLENCE encounter, the hero defeats the opponent using magical punishment and slapstick hijinks 💥. For the player, this means tough battles that use an active combo system for a variety of effects!
In a LOVE encounter, the hero and their fellow belligerent hash it out in a talk and eventually become friends 💗. For the player, this means the RPG combat takes on dating sim elements as you try to win over your datemate. Beware though, too many slip ups and the hero's charm spell, which keeps the enemy from attacking, will break, leaving them drained and in trouble...
Players of the game can expect witty dialogue, dry humour, silly antics, and sapphism. The focus of the game is how the characters develop through the hero's actions, not so much about dogmatically demonstrating the moral ramifications of choosing this or that option.
Awesome! When is the release date?
Here lies the nuance between an indie developer and a casual developer: Given my situation, I can only work on this project in my free time, so at the time of writing, a release date isn't on the horizon quite yet.
